What should never go down the drain

Wipes of any kind — including the ones labeled flushable — along with paper towels, feminine products, cat litter, coffee grounds, and cooking grease. Grease is the worst offender: it cools, hardens, and builds up in the tank and outlet baffle. Harsh drain chemicals and bleach in quantity kill the bacteria your tank depends on to break down solids. If a drain is already slow or blocked on the house side of the tank, that’s a plumbing problem rather than a septic one — we handle both, so it’s still one call.

Watch your water use

A septic system is sized for a steady flow, not a flood. Spread laundry across the week instead of running six loads on a Saturday, fix running toilets and dripping faucets promptly, and give the system a rest between long showers when the house is full. Overloading it hydraulically pushes solids out toward the field lines before they have had time to settle.

Look after the drain field

Don’t park vehicles or trailers, or build sheds and decks, over the field lines — the weight compacts the soil and can crush the pipe. Keep trees and large shrubs well back, because roots will find the lines. And divert gutter downspouts and surface runoff away from the field: saturated ground cannot absorb what the tank sends it.

Keep a record

Note the date every time the tank is pumped and keep the report. It tells the next technician what has changed since last time, and it is the first thing a buyer’s inspector asks for when you sell.
