When the air conditioning quits in an Alabama summer, the house heats up fast. Precision Services repairs air conditioners across Birmingham, McCalla, Bessemer and Hueytown, on every major brand, whether we installed it or not. One licensed, insured, in-house crew out of McCalla with 35+ years of keeping Birmingham homes cool. We diagnose before we quote, we quote before we work, and our line answers 24/7.
Most AC failures come down to a handful of parts, and most of them are repairs, not replacements. We repair central air conditioners, heat pumps running in cooling mode, and ductless mini-splits for homes and businesses across the Birmingham metro.
Because we’re a multi-trade shop, one call covers it. If the problem turns out to be electrical, such as a tripped breaker, a failed disconnect or bad wiring at the condenser, the same crew handles the electrical work too.
A few causes are simple enough to rule out yourself:
If none of that fixes it, call us. And don’t keep resetting a breaker that keeps tripping, because that’s a sign of an electrical fault.
Our rule of thumb: if the system is under 10 years old, repair it. If it’s 12 to 15 years old or more and facing a major repair like a compressor or a coil, it’s worth looking at the replacement numbers too. We’ll show you both and let you decide, rather than pushing a new system you don’t need yet.
The refrigerant matters as well. Systems built to run on R-22 are expensive to recharge because R-22 is no longer produced in the US, so if an older R-22 system has a refrigerant leak, replacing it is often the better investment. Financing is available through Wells Fargo.
Heating with gas rather than a heat pump? The other half of the same system is covered on our furnace repair and replacement page.
When replacement is the right call, we size the new system to the house, not to whatever came out of it. An oversized unit short-cycles and never pulls the humidity out of an Alabama summer, and an undersized one runs all day without keeping up. We’ll walk you through efficiency ratings and what the running cost looks like on a real power bill here. For heat pumps, furnaces and whole-system replacements, see our HVAC services.
No AC in a Birmingham heat wave is a genuine emergency, especially with young kids, elderly family or pets in the house. Our line answers 24/7, and because our crews are in-house, one call gets you the diagnosis and the repair. Call (205) 807-6319.
Most of the no-cool calls we run in July could have been caught in April. A spring tune-up covers coil cleaning, a refrigerant check, the capacitor and contactor, the electrical connections, the condensate drain and the filter, and finds the weak parts before the first heat wave does. See our HVAC maintenance options.
Our shop is in McCalla, which puts our trucks minutes from Bessemer, Hueytown, Bucksville and the Tannehill area, and straight up the I-459 and I-20/59 corridor into Birmingham. Closer trucks mean a faster response on the days when everybody’s AC fails at once, and in a Birmingham summer those are exactly the days it matters.
The most common causes are a dirty air filter, a failed capacitor that stops the outdoor unit from running, low refrigerant from a leak, or a frozen evaporator coil. Check the filter and make sure the outdoor fan is spinning. If the air still isn’t cold, call us for a diagnosis.
Ice on the coil or the copper lines usually means low airflow, from a clogged filter or a blower problem, or low refrigerant from a leak. Turn the system off and let it thaw before running it again, because running it frozen can damage the compressor.
Usually a clogged condensate drain line. The water your AC pulls out of the air has nowhere to go and backs up. Left alone it can damage ceilings and floors, and many systems have a float switch that shuts the AC off until the drain is cleared.
Our service call fee is $79. That covers a licensed technician coming out and a real diagnosis, and you get an upfront price for the repair before any work starts.
